In this edition of Vetegrity Snapshots, we’re catching up with Melissa Annen—a Maryland-based scrum master, author, and returning Vetegrity team member. From Midwest roots to IC resilience, Melissa’s story is all about adaptability, grit, and finding the right fit.

You’ve worked with Vetegrity twice now—what brought you back, and what made it feel like the right place to return to?

Vetegrity is a great company; they have always treated me well. I left for an opportunity that allowed me to grow, and when I decided to return to contractor work, Vetegrity was the first company I reached out to. I’m delighted to be back.

You’ve pivoted roles, adapted to contract changes, and found new paths within the company. How has that shaped your perspective on growth?

The contracting world is not an easy one. We deal with uncertainty, funding issues, and sometimes sudden changes. It’s hard not to take some of it personally, but it was great that Vetegrity was able to find me another position so quickly. And thankfully, that position is an excellent fit for me. I get to stay at a company where I feel at home, and work on a contract where I’m able to grow.

The word “grit” is literally in our name—how has grit shown up in your personal or professional journey?

I grew up in a small farming town. Grit makes me think of the people I grew up around, the hardworking people who shaped me and gave me my work ethic. Having worked with veterans and being married to one, many exude grit. It’s empowering to work around so many talented, gritty people.

You’ve mentioned that Vetegrity feels different when it comes to leadership and being heard. What does that culture of listening mean to you?

It feels like we spend more time at work than we do with our families, so working for a company that cares, puts employees’ needs first, and shows that leadership genuinely cares about you, it does give you a feeling of being at home.

Outside of work, you’re a published author and podcaster—that’s incredible! How do those creative passions influence the way you show up in your day job?

I am happiest when I can incorporate some creativity into my work, and I’ve been lucky to use those skills in my daily work.

Looking back, from Illinois to Maryland, insurance to the IC, what’s surprised you most about your career path—and what are you most proud of?

I never considered myself a technical person, but that is the path I have taken. I recently had to troubleshoot some issues, and I found solutions fairly quickly. I realized that I have learned a great deal over the years, more than I thought I was capable of. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in my career.
